O Arranca Corações

1

First book from the collection ‘Livro B’ published by Editorial Estampa in 1970, in Portugal. Alda Rosa designed the pocket book collection for Editorial Estampa which was implemented by the typesetters, in subsequent editions. These are small pocketbooks that became known as the black cover books due to the iconic cover design. In this collection, Editorial Estampa published what were considered to be marginal authors, at the time, such as Boris Vian, Oscar Wilde and Balzac, privileging genres such as surrealism and fantasy, translated to Portuguese by authors such as José Saramago. The books are quite elegant, with an unusually long shape format, set in silver type over a black card contrasting with blue interior pages.  Alda Rosa designed the cover in a way that could be easily continued as a series by the typesetter at the printers. For this, Alda Rosa thought of a design that keeps elements in the form, such as the ornamental bits of type and the oval double border. The title is set in a reverse contrast typeface which gives the cover a lot of character and 'Livro B' in a shadow typeface. The book cover design combines elements in an unusual order and arrangement capturing the eerie nature of the series.
